Theatre I

Level: Advanced Beginner

Format: Studio-based class with instructor-led exercises and scene work

Recommended for: Students interested in developing acting skills, stage presence, and character work


Course Description: Theatre I is an engaging and foundational course designed for young performers to explore the fundamentals of acting, stage presence, and storytelling. Through interactive exercises, improvisation, and ensemble work, students will develop confidence, creativity, and expressive skills essential for theatrical performance. This class introduces key acting techniques, including vocal projection, body awareness, and emotional expression, helping students build a strong stage presence. Emphasis will be placed on collaboration, character development, and understanding theatrical storytelling in a supportive and dynamic environment.


Throughout the course, students will participate in scene work, monologue exploration, and improvisational exercises designed to strengthen their ability to think and react in the moment. They will engage in vocal warm-ups, movement activities, and script analysis to develop their understanding of stage dynamics and performance techniques. Special focus will be given to listening skills, memorization strategies, and ensemble building, ensuring that students gain both individual and group performance experience. By working on short scripted scenes and original creative pieces, students will build confidence and stage awareness while discovering their unique artistic voices.


By the end of Theatre I, students will have a solid foundation in stage performance, demonstrating an increased ability to project, articulate, and embody characters with authenticity. They will develop skills in collaboration, improvisation, and storytelling that will serve as a strong base for continued theater training. This class provides young performers with an exciting introduction to the stage, preparing them for future theatrical productions and more advanced acting study.


Course Expectations:Active participation in exercises, openness to feedback, and engagement with scene work and improvisation.

Assessment Methods: Observation of performance quality, creativity, and participation in exercises and scenes.

Attendance Requirement: Consistent attendance is critical to maintain ensemble development and continuity in skill-building.


Course Attire: NB T-shirt, black leggings, and sneakers

Notes: Prepares students for Theatre II and further acting study in the Conservatory Division.
