Modern Technique II

Level: Intermediate

Credits: TBD

Format: Studio-based training with live and recorded music

Recommended for: Dancers developing or refining modern dance skills

Course Description: Modern Technique II builds upon intermediate modern and contemporary foundations, challenging dancers with increased complexity in movement, musicality, and spatial awareness. This course deepens the exploration of weight shifts, momentum, and dynamic energy shifts while reinforcing the importance of breath and fluidity in movement. Students will engage in advanced floor work, inversions, and release techniques that emphasize efficiency, articulation, and seamless transitions. With a focus on full-bodied movement and grounded expression, dancers will refine their ability to navigate both structured technique and organic improvisation.

Throughout the course, students will be introduced to more intricate movement sequences that require nuanced control of off-balance movements, spirals, and recovery techniques. Improvisational tasks will encourage dancers to explore personal movement impulses, pushing their artistic boundaries and enhancing their ability to make instinctual choices. Partnering work may be incorporated to develop sensitivity to weight-sharing, counterbalance, and spatial relationships. Additionally, students will examine modern dance theory and choreographic methodologies, gaining a deeper understanding of historical influences and contemporary applications.

By the end of Modern Technique II, dancers will demonstrate increased technical proficiency, heightened expressive range, and a refined ability to move with clarity, intention, and artistic depth. They will have developed a more sophisticated understanding of weight, release, and movement initiation, preparing them for advanced contemporary and modern training. This course is essential for dancers seeking to refine their technical skills, expand their creative movement vocabulary, and deepen their connection to performance and choreographic expression.
