Course Description: Modern Contemporary I is an immersive course that introduces students to the foundational techniques of modern dance pioneers while integrating contemporary movement principles. Emphasizing both technical proficiency and expressive freedom, this class explores the fluidity, groundedness, and dynamic contrasts that define modern and contemporary dance. Through structured exercises and guided improvisation, students will develop a deeper connection to their bodies, learning how to use weight, momentum, and breath to create organic, intentional movement. This course fosters an environment where dancers can explore personal artistry while building a strong technical base.
Students will engage in a variety of movement practices, including floor work, spirals, release techniques, and expansive traveling sequences. Attention will be given to dynamic shifts in energy, spatial awareness, and musicality, allowing dancers to move with greater efficiency and authenticity. Improvisational exercises will encourage exploration and self-expression, helping students develop their own movement voice while refining their ability to respond to movement prompts and external stimuli. Throughout the course, students will also examine key concepts such as opposition, suspension, and sequential movement, reinforcing their understanding of how the body moves in space.

They will have a heightened awareness of spatial intention, the ability to transition fluidly between movement qualities, and a growing sense of artistic individuality.
