Pre-Pointe

Level: Intermediate
Format: Studio-based conditioning and technique training
Recommended for: Ballet students preparing for pointe work
Course Description: Pre-Pointe is a specialized ballet class designed to prepare young dancers for the transition to pointe work by developing the necessary strength, alignment, and technical foundation. This course focuses on building proper foot articulation, ankle stability, and core engagement to ensure a safe and gradual progression toward dancing en pointe.
Through targeted exercises at the barre and in the center, students will refine their balance, turnout, and control while gaining a deeper understanding of body mechanics essential for pointe readiness. Emphasis will be placed on injury prevention, correct weight placement, and the disciplined approach required for this next stage of classical ballet training.
Throughout the course, dancers will engage in strengthening exercises specifically designed to enhance foot and ankle stability, working with therabands, resistance training, and proprioceptive drills. Classwork will also include relevés, controlled demi-pointe work, and alignment-focused combinations that reinforce the technical demands of pointe preparation. Additionally, dancers will be introduced to the anatomy of the foot and lower leg, learning how to maintain flexibility and prevent strain. Individual assessments and faculty evaluations will determine when each dancer is ready to safely progress to pointe shoes.
By the end of Pre-Pointe, students will demonstrate increased strength, control, and technical refinement, equipping them with the skills and knowledge required for pointe work. They will develop the discipline and body awareness needed to execute ballet technique with greater precision and confidence. This course is an essential step in the progression of serious ballet students and provides a strong foundation for a successful transition to full pointe training.
