Dance History & Theory

Dance History & Theory

Attire: Comfortable movement attire and a notebook.

Dance History & Theory is an advanced course that explores the historical, cultural, and theoretical foundations that have shaped dance as an art form. Students will examine the evolution of dance across cultures and time periods, exploring traditional, classical, modern, and contemporary dance forms while studying influential artists, choreographers, and movements that have transformed the field.

Through discussions, research, movement analysis, and written reflections, students will develop a deeper understanding of dance beyond physical technique. The course explores the connections between dance, music, theater, visual arts, film, and society, helping dancers understand how movement reflects culture, identity, and historical change.

By the end of the course, students will be able to analyze dance works, discuss choreographic choices, and articulate informed perspectives on the role of dance in society. This course prepares dancers, choreographers, educators, and future arts professionals with the critical thinking and cultural knowledge needed to engage with the dance field on a deeper level.
